COPD
Comprehensive care for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Our pulmonology specialists provide personalized treatment plans to manage symptoms, improve quality of life, and slow disease progression.

Understanding COPD
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a progressive lung disease that makes it hard to breathe. It is characterized by long-term respiratory symptoms and airflow limitation due to airway and/or alveolar abnormalities, usually caused by significant exposure to noxious particles or gases, most commonly cigarette smoke.
COPD affects over 250 million people worldwide and is the third leading cause of death globally. The two main conditions that contribute to COPD are emphysema (damage to air sacs) and chronic bronchitis (inflammation of airways). Many people with COPD have both conditions.
Did You Know? COPD is preventable and treatable. Quitting smoking is the single most effective way to slow disease progression.
Types of COPD
🫁 Chronic Bronchitis
Inflammation of the bronchial tubes causing persistent cough with mucus production for at least 3 months in 2 consecutive years.
🎈 Emphysema
Damage to the air sacs (alveoli) in the lungs, reducing surface area for gas exchange and causing breathlessness.
🔄 ACOS (Asthma-COPD Overlap)
Features of both asthma and COPD, requiring specialized treatment approach.
🌬️ Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency
Genetic form of emphysema that can affect people at younger ages, even non-smokers.
Risk Factors for COPD
🚬 Primary Risk Factors
- Cigarette smoking (80-90% of cases)
- Secondhand smoke exposure
- Biomass fuel exposure (wood, coal)
- Occupational dust and chemicals
- Air pollution
🧬 Other Risk Factors
- Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency
- Low birth weight / childhood lung infections
- Family history of COPD
- Aging (lung function declines naturally)
- Asthma in childhood
Common Symptoms of COPD
Symptoms often develop slowly and worsen over time. Many people dismiss early symptoms as signs of aging:
Shortness of Breath
Initially with exertion, later at rest
Chronic Cough
Often called "smoker's cough"
Sputum Production
Excess mucus, may be clear, white, yellow, or green
Fatigue
Lack of energy, reduced exercise tolerance
Chest Tightness
Feeling of pressure or heaviness
Weight Loss
In advanced stages
How is COPD Diagnosed?
- Spirometry (PFT): Gold standard diagnostic test measuring how much and how fast you can exhale. FEV1/FVC ratio < 0.70 confirms COPD.
- Chest X-Ray or CT Scan: To rule out other conditions and assess lung damage.
- Arterial Blood Gas (ABG): Measures oxygen and carbon dioxide levels.
- 6-Minute Walk Test: Assesses exercise capacity and oxygen desaturation.
- Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Test: For early-onset COPD or family history.
COPD Severity (GOLD Staging)
GOLD 1 - Mild
FEV1 ≥ 80%
Mild symptoms
GOLD 2 - Moderate
FEV1 50-79%
Breathlessness with exertion
GOLD 3 - Severe
FEV1 30-49%
Reduced quality of life
GOLD 4 - Very Severe
FEV1 <30%
Chronic respiratory failure
